Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB

Research Engineer or Senior Research Engineer for Data-Driven Life Science

Information about the position SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se), established in 2010, is a hub for life science research in Sweden and a collaboration between Swedish universities. SciLifeLab forms an internationally unique infrastructure and research community, bringing together groundbreaking life science technologies with data and AI expertise.

The successful candidate will be working related to SciLifeLab and the SciLifeLab Data Centre, a central unit within SciLifeLab with responsibility for information and data management projects, serving the SciLifeLab infrastructure and the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research program.  The Data Centre has a national assignment and operates a range of life science data and e-infrastructure services. It also works with questions related to FAIR data and open science, and in close collaboration with major national and international partners. Working within the Data Centre, you will be at the core of Sweden’s top infrastructure for life sciences and have the opportunity to actively shape how state-of-the-art IT and data science are integrated in Swedish life science research by building infrastructure and systems to maximize the scientific impact of the large amount of research data generated at SciLifeLab. You will work in a national team with researchers, data engineers, data stewards and system developers in a rapidly growing, dynamic and progressive team with a leading role in Swedish data-driven life science.

This position is placed at Chalmers E-Commons, the Chalmers digital research infrastructure for research and innovation by providing support, collaborative projects and resources for data and digital methods in research. The activities of Chalmers E-Commons are based on a data-centric perspective, covering all phases of the research data life-cycle from planning, collaboration with data, management and large-scale computing/analysis/visualisation in active projects, to data publishing and long-term preservation. Chalmers E-Commons provides and facilitates access to a range of local, national, and international e-infrastructure resources for large-scale computing and data storage/management, and hosts and coordinates Chalmers’ participation in national and international e-infrastructures within these fields, e.g., in this case, the SciLifeLab Data Centre. Chalmers E-Commons hosts a community of Digital Research Engineers. The offices also host computer infrastructure and machine learning/data science/research data management experts, who develop, build, and manage the local and national resources for large-scale computing and data storage at Chalmers and provide analysis support.

Job description SciLifeLab Data Centre (DC) and Chalmers E-Commons are looking for an experienced, motivated and knowledgeable system developer for our national DDLS data services, with a profile towards data engineering, systems development, and data management. In this role, you are expected to develop software, systems, and methods for SciLifeLab Data Centre’s services on research data management for life sciences. SciLifeLab is building an integrated ecosystem of data services, and you will, for example, work on projects related to image data, spatial biology, and genomics. As a developer, you will participate in Agile development teams and contribute with expertise on software engineering, system design, documentation, and security. An example is an ongoing project to set up a national instance of the open source bioimage data management platform OMERO, where you will help design and deploy bioimage data services, built upon established software and tools for data management and analysis, and adapt those services to the needs of the Swedish data-producing infrastructure platforms, as well as the broader research community in cell and molecular biology.

Your role may also partially include coordinating projects with teams of system developers, data engineers, and data stewards using Agile methodology. It may also include further alignment of processes and technologies, and connections with other parts of SciLifeLab.

You are expected to share the group's vision of developing unique, high-quality research data services and support for Swedish life sciences, driven by scientific needs, with a focus on IT and computational services, and with open science and FAIR data where possible. Besides maintaining contact with SciLifeLab, you will also have cases where you collaborate with researchers and infrastructure unit staff to ensure that services closely align with their needs.

Chalmers E-Commons is actively working to consolidate the notion of Digital Research Engineers as partners for bridging the gap between advanced e-infrastructure resources and the needs of research to solve increasingly more complex problems. With a strong background and experience, the role may be as a Senior Research Engineer, or as a Research Engineer, if you are at an earlier stage in developing strong career skills.

Who we are looking for  The following requirements are mandatory for the role:

• A university degree in a relevant area • Documented experience in Python and/or other relevant programming languages • Documented experience from working in Linux-based environments • Documented experience in documentation of ongoing work and code • Documented experience using container and cloud technologies, for example Docker, Helm, or Kubernetes. • Documented experience with version control systems, e.g., Git • Fluent in English

Contract terms Permanent employment.
